In 2003, attendees at the 3rd National Microarray Conference voted to form an association to facilitate the use of microarrays and other high-throughput technologies in Australia This became AMATA - The Australasian Microarray & Associated Technologies Association which built on the generous support provided by the Australian Cancer Research Foundation through the (ACRF) DNA-Resource. This association helps link many of the microarray core facilities and researchers around Australia and New Zealand.
AMATA has been instrumental in assisting in the introduction and implementation of microarrays in Australia by providing financial assistance through the combined purchases of cDNA and oligonucleotide libraries; serving as a forum for free dialogue and information exchange between core facilities; organising annual meetings and occasional workshops for the exchange of technical, scientific and bioinformatics information; rewarding students and young researchers at the annual conference; and by the ongoing support of implementing new genomic technologies by providing loans through the use of the initial funding by the Australian Cancer Research Fund.
